NATIONAL CENTER FOR
FAMILY RECOVERY
Dr. Portia Hunt, a recognized
authority on crisis intervention,
is
co-founder and head of the National Center for Family Recovery
(NCFFR), a public education resource to link those with mental and
emotional health needs to appropriate information and services. This
organization will serve minorities and distressed individuals by
providing a medium to help them recognize when and how to seek emotional
assistance. It will also serve professionals who have the mental health
resources to respond to these short and long-term needs. In support of
efforts to assist victims of the Katrina and Rita crises, for example,
the NCFFR website will feature a list of warning signs of trauma. It
offers consulting and training assistance to enable direct responders
and other providers to frame their services within a culturally relevant
context. Because of Dr. Hunt’s competency in these areas and her teams’
expertise in working with minorities and children, her organization was
chosen by Philadelphia and PEMA to complete their “Brotherly Love”
initiative with activities directed toward relocated Katrina & Rita
evacuees in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The project hired evacuees
and local residents to administer these outreach and recovery services
through their "Project Thrive" component. This population is now
being serviced through Horizon House.
Dr. Hunt is frequently called on as
a leading thinker on the state of African American mental health. Her
client list exceeds 100 governmental, business, public and private
organizations that she has effectively advised on various i ssues
relative to diversity and crisis management. She was engaged by the West
Philadelphia Consortium in the Osage Crisis to work with residents whose
homes were destroyed during the bombing of the MOVE organization.
Throughout her career, including during the national 9/11 Crisis, Dr.
Hunt has been invited to do public affairs talk shows to discuss the
impact of trauma on surviving children and families.
